Although epilepsy syndromes have been recognized for over 50 years, no formally accepted International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) classification of has existed until recently. The ILAE Task Force on Nosology and Definitions Taskforce (2017â2021) defined an syndrome as âa characteristic cluster clinical electroencephalographic features, often supported by specific etiological findings (structural, genetic, metabolic, immune, infectious).â Syndromes can be divided into generalized, focal, combined generalized focal syndromes. Some associated with developmental and/or epileptic encephalopathy or progressive neurological deterioration.
